Overview

There have never been more opportunities for planning graduates across the profession, as confirmed by the Ministerial Action Plan on Planning Resources and the recent Local Government Ireland Graduate Planner recruitment programme.

Coinciding with the Local Government Ireland Graduate Planner campaign, the Irish Planning Institute is hosting a 2.5-hour virtual training session focusing on building essential interview skills and confidence, covering the following key areas:

  1. Introduction by a Senior Planner in a Local Authority
A Senior Planner will provide insights into the interview process, helping participants understand what to expect.
  2. Typical Structure of a Public Service Interview
An overview of the general structure of public service interviews, with practical advice on how to navigate each stage confidently.
  3. Crafting a Strong Opening and Closing
Tips on creating a memorable opening statement and delivering a strong closing remark that leaves a positive impression.
  4. Making a Good First Impression
Advice on how to present yourself confidently and professionally, tailored for both in-person and virtual formats.
  5. Preparing for a Competency-Based Interview
A focus on how to prepare for and respond to competency-based questions, using the STAR method, with an overview of common questions asked.
  6. Managing Interview Nerves
Techniques to stay calm and composed during the interview, ensuring participants can perform at their best under pressure.
  7. Q&A
An opportunity for participants to ask questions, clarify points from the session, and receive additional insights on any areas of concern.

Though focusing on the needs of student and graduate members who may have applied for the Local Government Ireland Graduate Planner programme, this training may also be beneficial to anyone seeking more confidence in competency-based or public sector interviews.
