Irish Planning Institute Welcomes New Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government Posted on June 5, 2016June 14, 2021 by Irish Planning Institute The Irish Planning Institute (IPI) has welcomed the appointment of Simon Coveney as Minister at the new Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government. IPI president Deirdre Fallon said “The Institute hopes the configuration of the new department shows recognition of the crucial role that planning has to play in addressing the current housing crisis and in creating sustainable and vibrant living communities. The planning system is central to ensuring an adequate mix and supply of quality housing in the right place and at the right time and sound planning must be at the centre of future housing policy.” Fallon continued “The Institute also looks forward to engaging with the Department of Climate Change, Communications & Natural Resources and the Department of Regional Development and Rural Affairs on the role of planners and the planning system plays in delivering sustainable development across Ireland.” The IPI also acknowledged the work of outgoing Minister Alan Kelly and former Minister of State for Planning Paudie Coffey.
