Space Invaders Plan Transformation of Thomas Street

Posted on November 15, 2013June 14, 2021 by Irish Planning Institute

The first ever Space Invaders 2013 Urban Planning Competition event will take place in Dublin City Council’s Wood Quay Venue on Friday, 15th November 2013 from 1pm – 5.00pm. Student or Graduate Planners were invited to enter the Space Invaders competition and showcase their talents by coming up with a plan to transform a derelict site, adjacent to the iconic St. James’ Gate in Thomas Street, Dublin 8. Teams representing four Planning Schools in Ireland: University College Dublin, Queens University Belfast, University College Cork and Dublin Institute of Technology were shortlisted and will be displaying their plans for the site owned by the Digital Hub on Thomas Street. They were challenged to Plan beyond site-line, Rethink site. Transform area. The winning team will be chosen, on Friday, after all entrants have presented their plans to a diverse and select high profile jury of planners who include the RTPI and IPI Presidents. The winners will receive a cash prize of €1,000 along with a trophy for their University.

Co Founders and organisers Caroline O’ Farrell & Sybil Berne, Space Invaders said “Space Invaders is our response to the recession. We want to give other young planners the opportunity to gain some hands on experience, as well as the chance to display their work and showcase their talents”.

All projects will be on display at the Atrium at Dublin City Council, Civic Offices, Wood Quay from 18th November for one week.

This project is supported by Dublin City Council, The Royal Town Planning Institute and Irish Planning Institute, Diageo, the Digital Hub, Downey Planning, McGill Planning, Masterplan Associates, BMA Planning and MacCabe Durney Barnes.
